Harper Green Students Prepare for Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition
Monday, 27th April 2026

A group of Harper Green students recently took part in their Silver Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition, as they continue their preparations for the qualifying expedition later this year.
Based at Waddecar Activity Centre, students spent three days developing their navigation and expedition skills across varied terrain, including routes through River Brock and Beacon Fell Country Park, on the edge of the Forest of Bowland.
Working in small groups, students built confidence in map reading, route planning and decision-making. The expedition provided a valuable opportunity to apply these skills in real conditions, with students learning from challenges along the way.
Although the conditions were cold and windy at times, students remained positive and showed real resilience throughout, supporting one another well and working in teams. In the evenings, students prepared and cooked their own meals, building independence and camp craft skills, before relaxing together after a full day of walking.
Mrs Fercsi, DofE Lead, said: “We were really proud of how the students approached the expedition. They showed resilience, worked well together and made great progress with their navigation and independence.”
The practice expedition marks an important step in their Duke of Edinburgh journey, with students now looking ahead to their qualifying expedition later this year.
